My Office Before & After

It feels so good to have one room in the new house completely  DONE! Feels even better that it's "my" room. I've shared some before shots, some during shots and now I can show you the entire finished room. My office gets a lot of use so I wanted it to be functional and pretty.

When we bought the house it looked like this.  Lots of oak. Lots of brown. Lots of Blah.

Now it looks like this:
aaaaah....that's better!

Never underestimate the power of paint. Benjamin Moore Gray Owl on the walls, Snowfall White on the cabinets, Black on the doors. White Liatorp cabinets and Ektorp chairs from Ikea. Craigslist desk and chair.
This room is used as an office, music room, art studio and daily command central. I've filled it with shelves full of personal collections and quirky objects I enjoy being surrounded by. There are lots of images so enjoy the tour!

    1. Hi LLH :)
The Ikea cabinets are from the Liatorp collection. One of the great features of these cabinets is that you can hook together however many of them you like and add a continuous piece of interlocking crown molding to tie them all together to give the appearance of one long cabinet. I was ori
ginally inspired by one of Martha Stewart's butler pantries and knew the style and function of these cabinets would do the job, There are also other door options. I love the glass top doors which allow me to enjoy my collections and store extras like ironstone and paperwork below. Mine are lighted from above. It took my very handy and handsome husband 8 hours to assemble them for me. That ladies, is true love !

  21. Just clicked over from Edie's blog, and I have to say I LOVE your office. We built our home in the 80's and it is full of oak, oak, oak. My husband is coming around to painting some of it, but I am wondering what you think about having some painted woodwork and some that is remains original. What do you think?

    1. Hi Susan, Thank you :) Without seeing what you're working with, I would say if it's builder grade wood, paint over it if it's dated. All of it. It will be beautiful and you'll wonder why you waited. Let me know how it goes!

  22. I, too, just came over from Edie's blog. Love your office! I am dreaming up an office space (hopefully coming to fruition in a few weeks) and I think I just picked up that same desk, also from Craigslist! Lovely to see it set up in real life, like I picture it in my head :)

Hi - I just followed from Edie's blog, too! This room is fantastic - I love what you did. You have inspired me to paint some cabinetry that I have. I have been stuck on the exposed hinges, wasn't sure what to do with them. I see you have them, too, and either changed them out to white or painted them. Did you paint them? if so, how are they holding up?

    1. Hi Christian~Thank you so much :)
I had my painter paint the hinges the same color as the cabinets. This room gets a lot of use and the hinges are a bit of a mess really, but that kind of thing doesn't bother me at all. More vintage texture!

  24. There isn't a second opinion which office looks better - the before or the after one. You have done very well that you have changed the color - the brighter, the more cozier it is. I must admit - having a space for books and souvenirs make the office look more welcoming and warm.
